APPLICATION AND MIXING OF WEATHERSEAL STAINS
We have been telling you how "pudding like" the Weather Seal Stains are and how easy they are to apply. The photos on this page will help you understand the application.
You can stir the stain with a large paddle if you like but a paddle to fit in your power/cordless drill is available at your local Lowe's or Home Depot and makes the job a lot easier. Stir until the stain is well mixed and much the same color throughout. You need to stir the stain in your paint pail occasionally also.
Before applying the stain you need to repair or fill cracks and crevices in the logs especially if the home has been standing for some time and possibly not taken care of properly. I like to fill all minor cracks with Log Home caulking, do not waste your time with Home Center caulking, it simply was not intended for this purpose. We sell "Putty-Lastic" for this and other uses in building log homes. Remember!!!! The stain goes on lighter than the finish color so don't get upset if it doesn't look right when you begin. Drying changes the color to what you intended.
I don't like to paint overhangs so I try to make them as easy as possible. Weather Seal's pudding texture prevents the product from running down to your elbow. I usually keep a couple paper towels folded and in my hip pocket for emergencies plus you can wipe the handle of the brush every now and then.
You will be surprised how well the stain stays in the brush bristles while handling and applying.
This photo gives you the difference in color/shade from first application and after the stain begins to dry. In an outdoor temperature of 75 degrees the stain will dry to the new color in about 45 minutes to an hour.
Photo on the right is a wall of logs after two coats of sunlight applied. Remember, I do not apply the stain over logs or any other wooden material that has not been properly prepared. That includes filling all voids in the wood with the proper material.
The home that is depicted in the previous photos was not properly prepared for stain. My company did not contract this job.
THE PHOTOS ARE ONLY TO SHOW HOW THE WORK IS DONE.
